Part 1 There’s nothing more terrifying than feeling out of place and that’s exactly how the four of them feel, Arties the only one in the wheelchair, Brittany’s the only female, Kurt is much too feminine and Puck, well Puck sort of mingles in but it’s still no less terrifying for him. The trainer doesn’t look like an imposing man, but they know just what he’s capable off and how many trophies line the walls of his house {Brittany also had his poster as a little girl, kissed it twice before going to sleep in the hopes that one day she would be able to meet him.} He speaks forever and Brittany finds that she doesn’t understand half of what he’s saying and she’s not listening to the other half, but she tries to look interested and fails spectacularly when her eyes glance to the door and she sees the car outside. It’s sleek and black and Brittany wants nothing more than to climb in it and see if it goes as fast as it looks. Puck’s thinking the same thing too; he’s openly leering at the car the way he would women and Kurt can’t help but think that it would look better with a little colour, something to really draw your attention to the undoubtedly expensive vehicle.
Artie knew he was the only one who listened, stories of winnings, stories of loss, stories that pulled at his heartstrings and made him want to cry, all stories that had nothing to do with what they were going to do today and everything to do with driving, or more specifically one person’s love of it. They loved it too {its why even after everything they still went down to the track every day and drove like there life depended on it}, but he had to wonder if any of them loved it as much as the man in front of them.
When they pile outside they can’t help but feel a little inadequate. There’s five different drivers and each one of them has a fancy car and a team that could very well be a small army, while they have Puck’s heavily modified first car {Their expensive car long since destroyed along with Arties legs} and three people, one of whom was handicapped and the other whose job it was to provide the fashion. There’s no way they can compare with the others and they know it, but Brittany likes a challenge almost as much as Puck {because Brittany’s never been very good at anything except driving} and she wants to be the best almost as much as she wants to impress her childhood idol.
They all know why there out on the track, despite not having listened to anything. It’s in the atmosphere, a tense sort of camaraderie where they don’t know anybody well enough to hate them and they all seem like the nice sort but they really want them to crash and burn {and they can’t hate themselves for it, even though they know they should.} Everybody knows there’s a race in the works and everybody but Brittany, Puck and Kurt knows just what the stakes are {but they can tell it’s something big, and can’t help but want it too.} The other drivers big themselves up, boasting about their wins and what sponsorships they’ve raced for and how this is everybody’s dream {the biggest sponsorship this side of the world} and Brittany tries to listen but their using to many big words and the others are too busy making plans that they can’t explain it to her, and so she walks away to find some quiet, to find somewhere where she doesn’t have to feel so lost. Only this is her first time at the track and so she only has to go down a passageway before she finds herself a different sort of lost.
It takes her the best part of half an hour to find somebody to help her {and in that time the others are setting the cars up for the race and the other drivers have taken their turns to get a feel for the course} and the person she finds is all sorts of distracting {and the total opposite of Brittany with her tanned skin, dark hair and sharp business suit} and Brittany also notes that she’s all kinds of mean and probably not the sort of person she wants to ever encounter again. Still the woman dutifully leads her back {strangely enough it’s only down another tunnel} but can’t help but remark on Brittany’s lack of intelligence which in turn makes Brittany sort of sad because it’s sort of a soft spot for her. When they’re back at the track Artie, Puck and Kurt are with her straight away, scolding her for wandering off and then each other for not keeping an eye on her {because they all know that Brittany’s different and that sometimes she wanders off} and her saviour heads towards the trainer with nothing but a sneer, and so Brittany sticks her middle finger up because even that small rebellion makes her feel so much better. Only then she’s sure the trainer has seen her because he scowls in her direction before his lips turn upwards. There’s not enough time to worry about if the trainer saw her or not because there’s a race to run and a first place position to be won and Brittany knows that takes precedence over everything else and maybe by the time she’s finished she won’t feel so hurt.

Starting the engine brings her a familiar feeling and the voices of Artie and Puck remind her that she’s not just racing for her. Then she catches her reflection in the mirror and notices her driving suit is not as plain as she is used to, but it has sparkles on and flowers {she thinks it’s all kinds of amazing that Kurt did this as such short notice} and now she’s driving for a cause much bigger than her, Puck and Artie, she’s driving for Kurt; to renew his interest in something he used to love so much. She drives with a smile on her face and fire in her eyes because she knows she has to win this, it’s her shot at fixing things, it’s their time do what they love and it’s her time to feel something close to amazing.
Everybody’s surprised when two cars cross the line at the same time so the special equipment has to decide who came first {Brittany feels sorry for it, because it’s an impossible job to decide who came first when they crossed at the same time} and it turns out that one came first by two centimetres. Brittany is one of those two cars, but the other driver is a three times champion who hasn’t lost in the past twenty three races. When she climbs out of the car she lets herself reflect on the race, realises that the others are well known racing drivers, the best in their field and she wonders why she never really noticed before. Kurt has tears streaming down his face, Puck and Artie can’t even speak, and that’s how Brittany knows they didn’t come in first, she’s not really sure what they lost and so she can do nothing but apologise.
