Can I recommend: 1) Scrobbling all or most of your listening to last.fm. 2) Connecting last.fm to songkick for gig recommendations. 3) Taking an RSS feed from last.fm for gig and new album information (assuming you use an RSS feed reader).
Oh, and for my reference (and anyone else reading this) the user-specific new releases feed can be found as described above but have the general form: http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/user/username/newreleases.rss ... and it seems that you can see anyone's and don't have to be logged in. (Which is handy because it means the RSS works without having to give it your login credentials, which is faffy at best.) So I can see that you are being told about an upcoming Leonard Cohen release, which serves you right. :-)

Click on the rss symbol.

Set your location and click the "subscribe" button.
It works if you scrobble music because it knows what bands you like.
