Can I recommend: 1) Scrobbling all or most of your listening to last.fm. 2) Connecting last.fm to songkick for gig recommendations. 3) Taking an RSS feed from last.fm for gig and new album information (assuming you use an RSS feed reader).
Oh, and for my reference (and anyone else reading this) the user-specific new releases feed can be found as described above but have the general form: http://ws.audioscrobbler.com/2.0/user/username/newreleases.rss ... and it seems that you can see anyone's and don't have to be logged in. (Which is handy because it means the RSS works without having to give it your login credentials, which is faffy at best.) So I can see that you are being told about an upcoming Leonard Cohen release, which serves you right. :-)
Weirdly there is a user called steer, unrelated (AFAIK) to me who has very similar taste in music. At one point I accidentally imported his lastfm information into songkick and it took me ages to spot because I was getting good gig recommendations but then the occasional "off" one.
The gig thing works pretty well for me but I think it's easier as my location is "london". When I was in York I would have wanted to know about gigs for Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield too. I don't remmeber if you can set a radius.
Cool, thank you very much, sussed it. Very handy - with a couple of moments of adding bands I liked I had some useful gig suggestions. I suspect if I feed it more info it will get even better. (Although I probably can't easily separate the kid-specific stuff, so will end up with kiddie recommendations mixed in. Much as my Amazon suggestions are.)
You can tell it's fairly smart: it thinks our musical compatibility is "very low". :-)

It works if you scrobble music because it knows what bands you like.
