Has anyone any personal experience of earplugs for sleeping in? I like to sleep with my head sideways on the pillow, so find the ones that stick out too uncomfortable ( Read more... )

I just use the cheap generic kind from Boots. I am a very light sleeper and like to sleep with my head sideways too.

Mind you, I'm not sure what you mean by "the ones that stick out" - I just push them all the way in...

I'm guessing he means stuff like Etymotics, which have a plastic bit that sticks out of the ear.

Seconded buying the cheap squashy foam ones from Boots - they're great and you don't notice once they're in.

I think I must have terribly short ear canals or something - there appears to be no physical way I can shove those type of earplugs far enough in so as they don't have about half sticking out, so lying on the ear puts uncomfortable pressure on it.

You could always cut them in half?

I never got on with earplugs for sleeping - even the fitted ones feel wrong to me. I used to wreap a t-shirt around my head instead, which cut down the sound and also functioned as an eye mask.

I now have an image of you with a t-shirt wrapped around your head like John Merrick's bag. "Don't look at me! I'm a monster!"

(sorry!)

I use silicone or wax. If you're not sure which ones you like, try a sample pack from these guys - http://www.snorestore.co.uk/acatalog/mouldable_sample_pack.html

Wax ones like Muffles from chemists.
You push them in a bit and then 15 min later once they're soft you can push them in further (and then out a tiny bit to readjust the air pressure).
