Develop/mental update

Feb 07, 2009 19:56

Time for another children update, now they are both (wow!) asleep at the same time. I cut **FIXME's hair in the bath this evening, and he was good as gold at sitting entirely still while I did it, which is annoying because it means the blame for any tonsorial misfunction must be entirely mine.

More below the (hair) cut ... )

Loved reading this, very interesting!

To do is getting very cunning! My word but that's bright behaviour!

Would like to discuss more, but have to finish editing essay on values in professional practice about informed consent. Needless to say there is fire and brimstone in there from me about "professionals" failing to get it properly.

I do find the developmental updates intriguing and alarming - I think I can't grasp that **FIXME's acquisition of powers will slow, and he won't keep getting increasingly sophisticated until he's an omnipotent 30-something with laser eyes.

Is the 'careful manipulation' connected to his perception of your perception? As in, has he started lying because he's worked out that you don't know everything? Or did he already have that? I suppose he already describes things to people because they weren't there.
(Sorry, that's a bit cynical - I didn't intend to imply that the second he noticed you weren't omniscient he lied to you.)

It is faintly terrifying. I mean, of course I'd like my kids to be brighter than me, in the abstract. But he is accreting ablities at a spectacular rate. **TODO is doing the even more so, of course, but I think there's a threshold of basic motor and linguistic competence below which you can't really imagine how much learning is required. Argh, just realised - after just 2.5 years on the job, much of which was taken up with learning conscious control over mouth and tongue movement, **FIXME has a better grasp of spoken English than I have of any other language.

the second he noticed you weren't omniscient he lied to youThat's pretty much the size of it, it seems. It started with peek-a-boo games, I think (I can see this but you can't) but it's getting beyond that now ( ... )

Fascinating - yes, do more experiments on the kids! (Is it too late to put the small one in a (comfy) box to see if he spontaneously speaks the language of the angels?)
