My Old English is very rocky indeed, but the text around it says "Merlin waes micel dry and haefde micelne craft, his galdras waeron fremful. Wis ond milde he waes Arthurs leofost gefera"
Which is probably all wrong, but is MEANT to translate as, "Merlin was a great wizard and had great power, his charms were effective. Wise and kind, he was Arthur's most beloved companion."
(I've used their form of handwriting, so some of the letters, like w and s etc, don't look like our letters.)
