I think someone might tell the girl off for the gesture, but I can't see them taking points. And with the medical stuff, we don't know enough about how magical medicine works in HP, imo, which means you can probably get away with whatever's convenient, as long as you put a bit of effort into creating an explanation.

okay re: Quidditch question--wasn't sure cuz i've seen stories about penalties given over simple BS like this in hockey, soccer and such--one player flips off an opposing player, calls another player a rude name, etc.

and yup i have an explanation in mind for the dangerous pregnancies/childbirths thing--that's part of the plot, actually. :)

I'm not quite sure what "flip him off" means? Oh, nevermind, just read the last sentence! I don't think the Hufflepuff Seeker would get told off for swearing, no, especially not with Goyle attempting to intimidate her.

Since we don't know it can go either way, whichever you'd prefer. Personally, I do think there will be a spell or potion or some way to tell the gender of the baby, and I do think a lot of couples would want to be surprised still.

Yep, I definitely think difficult pregnancies are possible. Magic helps, but it can't solve everything! Similarly with dying during childbirth, though I think this will be a tad rarer.

Good luck with your story :)

the last case of a nearly dying during childbirth in my fic would be mentioned as having happened in the early 80s--and i would think it's safe to assume that, like with medicine and medical science in the real world, that magical medicine would develop and improve over time? (or is that too farfetched, do you think?)

I don't think that's farfetched at all, I think it makes a lot of sense :) I'm sure there are wizards constantly improving and making new potions and so on :)

Re: magical pregnancies, I'm currently writing a fic where one of the characters is having a difficult pregnancy. In my mind it's pretty similar to Muggle pregnancies, except they can take potions that we don't have to help with the symptoms. From what we see in the books, that's what seems most logical to me. For example, when Harry breaks his arm, Madam Pomfrey has a potion that could fix it very quickly. But when the bones actually disappear (thank you professor Lockhart!), it now takes much longer to grow them back, and it's painful. Being magical doesn't keep them from getting hurt, and they rarely have spells that can just make everything right in an instant. They have the same injuries and illnesses as Muggles, only with somewhat more efficient ways of dealing with them.

yup i was thinking of them having access to spells or potions for the simple things (i.e. morning sickness). but in the case of my question, i was intending (and now will do, yay) of one character in particular's family line being prone to very difficult pregnancies/birthings.

A Brit-pick comment -- if the Hufflepuff Seeker is British, she won't 'flip him off' because we don't use that phrase (and when I first read it, I thought you meant that she flipped/pushed him off his broom -- which would surely be a penalty)! She might 'give him the finger' (because people are doing that more and more, but the phrase itself still feels quite American) but the more traditionally British thing is to 'stick two fingers up at him' (in a V-shape). It depends how Brit-picked you want your story to be!

Quidditch seems such a potentially chaotic and violent game, I don't personally think that anyone would give her a penalty for making a rude gesture.

As for the pregnancy, I think that's a situation where you can invent (canon compliant) potions and complications to fit your plot.

oops, i did not realize that my phrasing was wholly American. if i decide to keep it, i can certainly change that! thank you for letting me know.

(FWIW, she is actually Australian, lol. haven't decided to say whether she's an exchange student or recently emigrated/transferred to Hogwarts.)
