Yup, Works is the free taste, both so Dell and HP can pretend like they're giving you a working word processor, and so you in frustration will cough up the cash for a retail version of Office (so much more expensive than the OEM version that Dell/etc.. could have bought).
Assuming you aren't going to go shopping for software in the torrent store, you can get Word for pretty cheap, if you want it.
For under $150, you can get the latest versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote with the Office Home & Student 2007 edition.
Or, if you can work the student angle, you can get the whole Office suite for under $70 at the Ultimate Steal promotional site.
Do you have any knowledge or opinions about Final Draft? Since the overwhelming majority of my word processing is for scripts, I'm wondering if it might be worth the investment.
I haven't looked at it in over a decade, nor did I ever use it, but I think it could be useful. They have a free trial, so I would pick a time period where you're really going to be writing a lot and see how it goes. The story structure tools might be useful, and if you are working on screenplays, the formatting tools will be great
