Food Advice

I need some advice. After my bike ride yesterday, I could NOT stop eating. I remember now that the same thing used to happen back in my running days. I understand that my body needs more calories not only to fuel my exercise, but to recover afterwards. I usually eat more carbs before exercise and protein afterwards. But I'm obviously either a) ( Read more... )

eat slowly.

skip low density foods like nuts and dried fruit. eat food with lots of water in it like fruit. it will fill you up, and give your body the water it needs. tis the season for cheap fruit! freeze it and make a fruit smoothie with yogurt, sip it slowly!

or...drink tea! if i feel hungry, but i know i can't possibly be hungry after a meal, i'll have a cup of tea. fills me right up.

I don't think you need to worry about drama queen overindulging in nuts.

I often forget too. I've been trying to eat more vegan and gluten free, and nuts are such a mainstay of my diet.

Make sure you're getting 20g of fibre every day and your RDA of protein. It's incredible how far off people are getting these 2 in, and they make a world of difference to hunger levels.

Apparently I need 46 grams of protein. I have no idea how much I've been eating, but I doubt it's that much.

The need for protein tends to be ridiculoulsy overstated.

The average 'American' diet takes in WAY more protein than the body needs.

I just started working out again, and I seriously cannot believe how much more I have been eating. It's like I will never be full again!

Not alone! I upped my gym going this summer too, and at first I was hungry all the time (like I was when I started *going* to the gym a couple of years ago). I go to a class called Group Power, and I'm always starving when I leave. I don't know what the right answers are, but afterwards I (like you) try to eat protein after. Cottage cheese is a quick fix for me, as is Kashi "Go Lean" cereal. I should drink more water too, though. I think the massive hunger wears off a bit once working out becomes more regular.

Also try drinking more... you might actually be thirsty, too. If you get powdered Gatorade, you can make your own mix which will have the electrolytes and such you might be missing- I prefer to mix my own, since the store stuff is too sweet/ strong for me. You can do this with other things, instead of Gatorade, if you like, but Gatorade (the brand stuff) is ok. The knock offs are usually unhelpful at best.

Um, maybe try protein before and carbs afterwards? Carbs can be empty, but feel filling, so it might work to switch up the order. I guess when I exercise, I snack more during the day in general, and have one big meal later on. I don't know if that would help...

I've read a number of times that your body does need protein after working out...it helps repair/build muscle or something. I think fruit and good carbs are better before, because they give you more energy to do the working out (?). One thing I did learn recently is that spicy hummus is *definitely* not the answer, unless you like it coming back during your workout :)
