I've never been a very good liar, so I can't say I have very good advice. I guess the best I can say is that you try to find at least a bit of good in the holiday. If you've got something worth making you happy it can make all the other stuff seem less troublesome.
Maybe you should keep the people that make you feel better nearby on the day, so if you feel like you can't handle it you can look to them for help? I'm sure your people wouldn't expect you to be the happiest person after what happened to your father though.
