Um... I don't mean to alarm anyone, but it seems the community has developed trinary code!

I just thought everyone should know!

Trinary? Okay, uh, I know computers work in binary, so what's that?

[Mind you, he doesn't actually know what it is computers do in binary, just that it's involved somehow. Jak's very much a practice-over-theory kind of guy - he knows how to make things go, but very seldom knows why they go.]

Basically, it's using three numbers instead of two! In this case 0, 1, and 2, although -1, 0, and +1 are also possibilities!

Okay... And the community using this instead of binary is... bad?

Well, there's nothing inherently bad about it, but it's certainly quite unusual!

...I'm afraid I'm unfamiliar with that sort of code. Could you explain?

I've been informed that the proper name is ternary logic... it involves three numbers instead of the usual 0 and 1, you see.

Ah, I see. Trinary was an excellent decision for a name, in that case, considering you did not know there was one already. And that is surprising.

Yes, it's quite surprising! I would say it was impossible if it hadn't already happened!

What did you break, kid?

Mr. Trinity, please don't joke! This is a very serious situation!

I really wasn't joking, kid. Yeah, yeah. So what did you do?

I attempted to put a parental filter in the community, but the program bounced back extremely corrupted!

[He's read over the conversation with Flynn.]

The community rewrote your code?

areyoulovers February 5 2011, 19:23:53 UTC
Yes, it seems so!

lt_cmmdr_scott February 5 2011, 21:49:53 UTC
That's strange.

areyoulovers February 7 2011, 00:14:56 UTC
It's certainly quite confusing!

Trinary? What, like there's something else along with the zeros and ones? Will that even work or is it just superficial?

areyoulovers February 5 2011, 19:24:30 UTC
Oh, no, if you have a machine set up to interpret ternary code, it will work perfectly fine! The problem is, there really aren't any machines like that, at least on my world...

Huh. Nor mine. But, twenty-first century Earth, I figure there's quite a few people here ahead of me.

Oh, I'm in the 24th century! But it seems there's a way to mimic ternary code, so that's what we're going to try!
