Big step

Apparently I can keep things to myself for all of four days. On Tuesday I joined Curves. There's one that's on my way home from work, only five minutes from home. I wasn't sure that it would be for me, but I set up an appointment and was pleasantly surprised by what I saw. The machines really do give a good workout, even though you're only at each ( Read more... )

Well, we can give each other encouragement over the internet as I joined the local gym a few weeks back. Medically speaking, I am obese so there was every reason for me to join.

That we can. I liked it when I used to belong to a gym, it just got expensive, and then I moved, and then moved again... And sadly, my stopping going to the gym coincides with when I got more involved with fanfic.

Congratulations! Wow, this must be 'join a gym' month! I just joined the YMCA. Today will be my fitness evaluation and I'll be meeting with a trainer to set up a workout program for me. I'm excited about it, but also a bit apprehensive. I'm really out of shape

I'm not really overweight (at least not according to my doctor) and I'm in good health, but I've gained about sixteen pounds in the last year and I haven't seriously exercised in ages (at least fifteen years!). My goal is to lose the sixteen extra pounds I've put on and to tone my body all over. I'm not getting any younger here, so I figure it's now or never. ;)

Best of luck to you. Maybe we can encourage each other and keep each other posted on our progress!

Congrats to you too. Who would have thought November was a popular month for gym-joining? Better to be active before all the holiday eating than to join afterwards, I guess. Actually, for me, that's just how the timing worked out. If my doctor had kept my original appointment, I this would have happened two months sooner.

I've been overweight my entire life, not grossly - around a size 18-20, but for my 5' frame, it's a lot. But when all you do is sit at a computer all day for work, then go home and sit at the computer, it's not surprising when weight piles up. I'm looking forward to the reversal process.

We can definitely do the encouragement thing. It's something we definitely all need.

Good luck meeting with your trainer. I worked with one when I used to belong to a gym and it definitely helped having someone to show you around and get you going. If I had joined a regular gym, I would have hired a trainer again, but with Curves, everyone does all of the machines, and they're hydraulic, so no weights to adjust.

Good luck. My blood sugar was over 200 all week. I think I'll have to go to Curves too. I actually like going to the gym. My problem here? There is NO convenient ones.

Oh and as to the oatmeal, don't go for the instant kind. Go for the steel cut ones or the Irish/Scottish ones (Bob's Red Mill makes great oatmeal) yes, this requires about 10 minutes cook time but the instant oatmeal is fiberless. (hence instant) the type I suggested has fiber which will lower your cholesterol and blood sugar. Kashi Go Lean also is very good for this. Preparation type: SPICE the day lights out of it. I load it up with cinnamon, nutmeg and all spice (and splenda) both are pretty good this way

I like gyms too. I liked it when I used to belong to one. So many people that I know belong to, and like, Curves that I figured I'd take a look at it. I was pleasantly surprised. It's also the easiest for me to stick with since it's on the way home from work, closer to home. The gym I was considering was right near work, but at least one of my co-workers goes there at the same time I'd be going (right after work).

Instant oatmeal's all I've got right now. It was either that or Low-Fat Strawberry Pop-tarts. I'm out of heathy breakfast food. I usually have cereal at work since they have free milk. (Kellogs Just Right at the moment, but I don't really like it.) I'm either going to take the diet class that Curves offers, or let my doctor suggest a nutritionist to work with. I eat okay, but I know that I'm not eating great. Not enough fruits & veges, too much cheese, etc.

Curves is my only option here but unfortunately it has no pool. I can't do aerobics otherwise, not with two broken ankles, two torn out knees and one messed up hip, not to mention the back and shoulder injuries. (yeah I'm a wreck)

A nutritionist is a good idea...in theory> The one I just went to left me very dubious

I can't do aerobics either because if my legs that cramp up very quickly. I liked using the weight machines at the gym for that reason. Curves is like using weight machines, without the weights. You're right on the no-pool front though.

I think I might try the diet class at Curves. I need to find out how much it costs first. The group dynamic will be better for me, I think. Like Weight Watchers, only without my prejudices against them. (My mom had me join WW when I was 10.)

I have legs that cramp up quickly, so I can't do aerobics or other high-impact exercising. Curves will be good for an overall body workout.

The cholesteral will be harder to get down, but I plan on sticking with Curves to get some weight off. You've got a deal. I'll see you in Rome.

We just shake hands here. I don't think we need a third person present.
