We've always done the one or two finger salute from the steering wheel (no, not that finger). I stopped after I moved to the city, but it comes back everytime I'm driving in a small town. Ah small town mentality.

I don't think I've ever waved, but I always smile and nod at a man that makes the round of the pubs and restaurants around here selling roses and chocolate coated fruit. I don't know how it started - I hardly ever go to any of the places and I think it's been years since we last met in a restaurant so he could offer me his goods, but we smile at each other as he drives by and, well, I can't say for sure about him, but it tends to cheer me up.
