A conversation with my father:

Dad: Where's the thing?

Me: What thing?

Dad: The thing. With the thing and the - the other thing. On the side.

Me: Oh, that thing. Yeah, I think it was on the table.

Dad: Who put it there?

Me: You're the one always playing with the thing.

My mother likes to talk about 'that' and 'it' ... unfortunately it's not always clear what she means so conversations go:

Mum: Have you seen that?

Me: What?

Mum: I need it, but I can't find. I'm sure you know where it is.

Me: Probably, but I have no idea what you're talking about.

Mum: You know I always leave it here and ...

Me: Can't you just give it a name? Describe it?

Mum: Can you think what I might have done with that?
