My annual Boingo recommendation!

I discovered a couple of years ago that, for a single $10 monthly subscription fee that could be turned off at any time, Boingo Wireless would get me online in the hotels and airports I was going to be in for Dragon*Con, where I'd otherwise have to pay separately.

Boingo works in the Atlanta Marriott Marquis and the Hyatt Regency Atlanta, as well ( Read more... )

For the record, Boingo did NOT work for me last year in the Hyatt International Tower. This year I'm going to try wifi through my phone, which has worked in a couple of pretty remote locations.

If the Hyatt's Wi-Fi service doesn't work in the International Tower, you should ask them to fix it! Assuming it's the same service throughout the hotel, Boingo should work anywhere in the facility that the hotel's Wi-Fi is available. (I know it's got limited coverage in some of the underground spots.)

Of course, if you can use your phone as a mobile hotspot without it costing extra, so much the better!

I downloaded the Wi-Finder app and paid my $10 but after that, nada. Is there something else I need to download? Admittedly I haven't tried it anyplace but home, with my Wi-Fi network running, but I still haven't gotten any of the "Connect" screens yet. Do I need to go out and try it someplace else, away from my Wi-Fi?

That's all you need. Until you're in a Boingo-served location, you won't see much. When you are, you should be able to use their app, or select the appropriate Wi-Fi network and use your web browser to log in. On some commercial provider login screens, including the IBAHN service at the Marriott, you can click the "roaming partners" or similar link on the main login page. No commercial provider is going to advertise that you could be using Boingo there and not give them your money.

This worked for me pretty well when I was in the Marriott-- had wifi at BWI & ATL airports and at the hotel. I've been in the Hilton and Sheraton the past few years, though, which meant no Boingo for me. It wasn't particularly fast at the hotel, but for a quick e-mail check in the morning, it wasn't bad at all.

We never could get Boingo to work on our laptops last year. Customer service was no help. So, if you are planning on doing it on laptop AND phone, dear GADS, DL to your laptop first or you'll end up paying for dual that you can't use.

We're currently at the Marriott, and signed up for Boingo this evening. Hubby went through phone first, then figured out how to do it through the Ibahn network here. Everything is working great! Even with both laptops, and both phones, it's way cheaper than the hotel.
