Newbie and Meetups

Hi folks - SO excited about Dragon*Con. I am a con newbie and I will also be travelling to the US from London so I am an Atlanta newbie too. Lots of excitement for me *snoopy dance*. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any HP meet ups and/or any Joss Whedon or LoTR related meet ups that are generally open for people interested in those ( Read more... )

How to find other nerds:
Step One: Walk into Dragon*Con
Step Two: Look Around
Step Three: ????
Step Four: Profit!

LOL, a lot of times you can just stumble into them! I would also google (nerdom) + Dragoncon + meetup + 2011

You should definitely go to the Evening in Bree party on Friday if you're into LOTR - it's a super fun party, Emerald Rose plays, and there will be lots of amazing costumes.

The Buffy and Dr. Horrible sing-a-longs are great for Whedonites. I think there is also a Browncoats:Redemption wrap party this year.

Yule Ball is the main HP event - however, I think it's the same time as the Browncoats party. Still, both last for hours, so you could easily go to both.

There's usually a photoshoot/meetup list posted on this comm about a week out. Other than that, the parties are great place to meet folks - though the best is probably the lines for the big panels. There will be panels every day about those various fandoms and the lines will be 1-2hrs long, so there's plenty of time to make new friends :)

If you have never done a Dr. Horrible Sing-a-Long live event, I'm serious... make that your number 1 priority for the entire 4 days. Our first Dragon*Con we went and that show alone was worth every penny we spent on the airplane, hotel, and food combined!

It is amazing, isn't it? Buffy Horror Picture Show is fantastic as well and usually right before it.

That's North Jersey accents, not South Jersey, FYI, lol!!!

:D

(I should also point out that King of the Hill is Texas, not Georgia, and that not all Southern accents are identical!)

Well welcome to the best con you'll ever go to!!! What hotel will you be staying at? Alot of people come to town on Weds, to get all settled in and relax before the fabulous chaos begins. If you're looking for people to hang out with, head to the Hyatt bar, or the Marriott bar (with the big sail). People will congregate all over the place, and are always agreeable to making more friends. When you get your program, you'll be able to see where all the panels for your special geekdom are. You're gonna have a bit of a time finding your way around, so don't be afraid to ask anyone for directions. Let us know where you'll be staying and what time you'll be arriving!!

Thank you!! I am staying at the Ritz (I know, a none con hotel, but all of the others were sold out when I booked and I think it is easy walking distance???) I was going to go to the Hyatt bar on the Weds evening to check out what was happening, so maybe that's a plan? Thanks for such a great message and for making me even more excited! I will be arriving late Weds as (see previous post) I am spending time in a couple of other places so I will be driving across from Savannah - I will definitely make sure I grab a beer in the Hyatt and/or Marriot on Weds though.

I'm at the Ritz too, and it's just a few minutes walk away, about three blocks to the main hotels - and almost right across the street from the Weston where the Buffy stuff happens!

Grand!! I am pleased it is so close - they did say it was when I called to book, but they would, wouldn't they ;-)

Hope to see you there.

Welcome to the South! Our tea comes iced and sweet.

You should check out the YA track's schedule for HP panels. Tom Felton is doing his first talk on Friday morning, and there are HP- centric panels at 830 and 10 that night. I'm on the 10 pm one, about fanfic, and it'll be neat. Hope to see you there!

Hey - I LOVE fanfic and am v keen on H/D and Snarry - I can't wait for your panel - I recently presented a paper at a conference here in England on HP fanfic so I am going to be hanging out at the YA track a lot I suspect - hope to see you there.
