Newbie and Meetups

Hi folks - SO excited about Dragon*Con. I am a con newbie and I will also be travelling to the US from London so I am an Atlanta newbie too. Lots of excitement for me *snoopy dance*. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any HP meet ups and/or any Joss Whedon or LoTR related meet ups that are generally open for people interested in those ( Read more... )

That's North Jersey accents, not South Jersey, FYI, lol!!!

:D

(I should also point out that King of the Hill is Texas, not Georgia, and that not all Southern accents are identical!)

Pesci and Tomaei yes, the rest is Georgia. Was filmed here in Monticello, Ga (where I live) and surrounding. The sack o'suds is on 16 on the Jasper/butts county line, courthuose is on the square, etc.

Having been twice, I didn't find Atlanta either that hot or that humid.

.....and being from South Jersey, where humidity is high, and to Atlanta 6 times (I think!) I don't find it to be that hot or humid either!

Maybe September isn't as bad as late spring, but there's a reason Atlanta's nickname is HOTlanta. The humidity is what kills me.

Last year it wasn't too bad. It's just been hot mostly the last few years. I'm just hoping we don't get another 105 with a heat index to 120 (and overnight lows only getting down to 80) like we had a couple weeks ago. That was kind of hell. (And I only live in NC, 300 miles north of Atlanta!)

Eeek - a bit worried about the weather! I will pack accordingly (although I am also visiting Orlando, Savannah and NYC over the couple of weeks and hoping one size fits all on the weather front...). If in doubt I will wear my 'what would Buffy do?' t-shirt and brave the warm, with frequent showering and throwing water all over my head! Thanks for handy packing tips - it's freezing here so hoodies and numerous scarves have been cautiously placed in the packing zone, which can likely be removed...

Bring a cardigan/hoody and a light scarf (the stylish kind?)--the inside of the hotels will be frosty with air conditioning. Unless there's a freak cold snap in the NYC area, shorts and t-shirts will work for all four places. (Light-colored, if possible, and loose-fitting but not sack-like. I've found that t-shirts I bought when I was heavier and are now extremely loose are less comfortable than newer ones that fit properly. YMMV.)

It gets really hot over here. Like, Spain or Portugal hot, then you add in humidity. I'd say you get used to it, but what really happens is you get used to not leaving your air-conditioned house for several months of the year.

One Brit??? Tom Felton and I will be in good company *ducks fruit thrown in my Engish direction* Pleased the accent will go down a treat although I am a lass and I understand it tends to work much better for the men ;-)

Thanks for your reply - much appreciated!

I said 'apart from the guests' :-) We had a long chat with Jason Carter last year, and my wife chatted a lot with Tom Felton the year before.

And as for 'works better for the men', one of my first trips stateside was a bit over 10 years ago, to work on a TV show in California. I was invited to dinner by a ex-playmate of the month and baywatch star., it works ;-)

And the heat doesn't bother me that much, since I was wearing 4 layers (body armour, etc.) while filming, in a clear plastic box under several thousand watts of lights, in a WW2 hanger, when it was 111F outside (the record high in SF at the time). I think it was about 120-125F in there. If you aren't prepared for it though, the wave that hits you as you step off the plane will knock you backwards.

I know you did, I was just kidding ;-) I am now very jealous of your wife who "chatted with Tom Felton a lot" - I am very excited about meeting him as he always seems to come across so well on panels etc. I really will have to be a bit more picky about the people I try to see though (so many good guests), otherwise I suspect I will spend my whole time waiting in lines!

Thanks for the reply!!
