[As unfortunate as this whole situation is, Japan is eager to make the best of it. All bundled up in his winter Gryffindor clothes, he makes his way into the village with no specific destination.

You could find him just about anywhere, being overly nosy and even observing people on the street and pausing to consider how they're acting. It's been so long since he's been outside in even his own country, so it's certainly a magical experience one way or the other.

He's sort of spacey though, so if you're not paying attention, chances are he's not looking the right way and will stumble into you. Followed by profuse apologies.]

[WEEPS NOOOO... At being asked so directly, he sort of hesitates and fidgets with his hair.]

Ahhh... "Japan" is fine... [He doesn't want to suggest the -san even though he appreciates it. Really his logic makes sense.]

It has not been long at all, correct.

[Could be worse! Could be Japan-chan? Noticing the fidgeting and the hesitation, Minato wonders if Japan is just saying that to be polite. And if so, he would not really be surprised. But he nods again, figuring next time he would use Japan-san.]

... I'm afraid my sense of time is a bit disordered at the moment. Today is the 17th, is it not?

[TRUE.]

That is correct. [He unfolds his arms so he can breathe into his hands briefly to try and warm them.] Ah... I am not sure that time from home always agrees with time here.

No, I don't think it does. I think it was March when I was last home. [Or at least it was when he was last awake at home. He keeps his hands shoved into his pockets for warmth and slouches because good posture is something he often neglects.]

March? Uwah... [That would be rather strange.] Is the year the same?

[He shakes his head.] It was 2009. What about for Japan-san?

[He seems briefly troubled by this. Just how many were so far ahead of him in a timeline?]

1868.

[Minato thinks about that for a moment, recalling his history classes.]

... I take it that the Tokugawa Shogunate has just come to an end?

[Unless of course this Japan is from an alternate universe or something. Which Minato probably wouldn't even be surprised about anymore.]

[He actually sort of lights up at the realization that someone this age from the future would realize that. Well, history and tradition has always been important...!]

That's correct!

[Minato nods and thinks about this for a while. He supposes he probably shouldn't say anything about anything past that, since Japan will of course learn about that himself some day. (Minato has faith that they won't be stuck here forever.)]

They make sure to teach us our history in school. Some places and some teachers teach it better than others, but everyone learns at least some of the basics.

Ah, that is good to hear, at least. [His extreme fear of HISTORY BEING LOST FOREVER is kind of knocked out with that. But yes, he won't ask, either.]

Does Minato-san enjoy it?

That depends on the teacher. Poor teachers are capable of making the most interesting subject impossible to get through, while excellent teachers are capable of making the most boring topic fascinating. I have had teachers of both varieties and varying stages in between. But usually, it is interesting.

That is fair enough. [And he believes he'll be understanding that a lot more here.]

... hopefully here there will be more of the latter sort of teacher than the former.

I hope so, as well. I believe learning is important, so it would be best if it could go smoothly.
