If you haven't yet seen the documentary called The Human Footprint, I highly recommend it. Here's the National Geographic website that includes information about it as well as supplementary info. Probably not enough. It's hard when you do not live in an area open to or recycle-friendly.

Some are :
efficient light bulbs, fans in all the rooms/blankets on the couch/etc to cut down on heating/cooling bills, huge compost pile in the back-back yard, soda bottle in both toilet tanks to conserve water.

When we go to stores where I know the take home will be limited, I have those goofy reusable bags from walmart to cart the stuff home in. Plus I cut the bags from walmart to loom stuff with. Cassie loves her "walmart rainhat".

I shred mags and newspaper for packing material when I ship boxes.

Burnables get burnt, but to be honest, I can't testify to the earth friendliness of that.
