Sometimes, amazement is the only way to describe how a person feels. It may be clichéd - I mean, who in their right mind would say that they're amazed to be back at Hogwarts? Perhaps thrilled, ready, anxious, but amazed... It just isn't the best of word choices.

Yet that's how I feel.

There are still House tables in the renovated Great Hall, and House points to gain even though school had just started. Everything seemed so normal, so similar to what ithad been, and yet so different. I look around the room and finally find the reason why.

Him.

Pansy is carelessly buttering a toast in the same fashion Granger is at Gryffindor's table while whispering to Potter. I wish I could hear them - it's my secret dream, to be accepted into their gang, to feel like I belong to something better than the loony groups my father used to host parties for back at the Manor.

Suddenly, Potter stands up and starts walking towards the Slytherin table. Everyone notices but no one wants to acknowledge it, and I end up being the only one staring back at him while he approaches, amazement written all over my face.

*-*-*-*-*-*

He is already beside us; the Eighth Years look at him like he is the bearer of bad news. I can feel the suspicion in their gazes and the trepidation in their veins while I myself try to keep at bay those emotions - I am not to keep my hopes up, I am not to smile back at that tentative smile shining in his face. I am not to give in to my own secret desires.

But when he clears his throat, I feel my knees wobble in a very unaristocratic way.

"Do you mind if I join you?"

No.

*-*-*-*-*-*

The whole Great Hall is waiting for a reply like old hawks. Even McGonagall, whose speech seems to have inspired the Hero's behaviour, has her eyes trained on us. It's not about Gryffindor versus Slytherin anymore - it's about Potter and Malfoy, once again.

I'm truly amazed by how little things change when it comes to old rivalries. But I'm more astonished by his hand, offered like mine was all those years ago, hanging from a line of thin, hopeful trust.

"Please?"

"Of course, Potter. You can sit with us."

A smile I could get used to lights my whole world.

amazement, lire_casander
