Summary: Harry takes the initiative to bring about some changes.
Harry sat, picking at his breakfast in the renovated Great Hall. He and the other students had arrived the night before, and classes, as well as life, were set to resume as normal. Of course, things would never be quite the same again, but Harry was confident that things would improve now that the Dark Lord was gone. Looking over at the Slytherin table, Harry commented aloud, "I hope things change for the better this year, just like McGonagall said in her welcoming speech."
Hermione paused in the act of buttering a piece of toast and said, "Everyone looks to you for leadership, Harry. Be the change you hope to see, and others will follow your example."
Harry straightened on the bench as he thought about what Hermione had said. She was right; if he chose to shun the Slytherins for their role, or rather non-role in the final battle, then the other students would, as well. However, if he extended his hand in friendship, then the others would accept their Slytherin peers, thus accelerating the healing process that the wizarding world so desperately needed.
Reaching a decision, Harry rose from the Gryffindor table and made his way to where the Slytherins were seated. He was aware that the Hall had gone silent and that every eye was trained on him. Approaching the cluster of fellow Eighth Year Slytherins, Harry saw that all of them were watching him with a measure of suspicion and trepidation.
Meeting the cool gray gaze of Slytherin's leader, Harry felt the familiar tingling in his stomach that Malfoy always inspired in him. Harry smiled, and though he addressed the entire table, his eyes were on Malfoy's as he asked, "Do you mind if I join you?"
