I just about hit the ceiling a couple of years ago, when a friend of mine, who should know better, sent me a racist anti-Muslim email. Presumably, the racism was okay because it was anti-Muslim. NOT.

I think I've been letting it slide for too long, just ignoring it, and it's progressively got worse. So yes, definitely some truth to that statement.

Sadly, I had to cut a friend after realizing she was a bigot and nothing was going to change. I still see her at a mutual friend's house from time to time. We're civil. But it's a shame. (An example--when she found out my liberal leanings, she asked me not to vote!! I might not have agreed with her political choice, but I would not EVER have asked her not to vote!)
