Technical Stargate Question

If something were to hit and destroy the DHD of a Stargate while there was an open outgoing wormhole, would it disengage? Assuming there is nobody travelling through the wormhole at the time and no radio signals are being transmitted ( Read more... )

....-scratches at very bad memory- they take their power from the DHD, right? pretty sure neds to get power from *something*.. whether black hole, live water or...

oh! wait! what about that one that they booted of the ship with dad piloting?? destroying that sun. it ran in space.. and I.. don't.. recall it being attached to a power source... wait.. was it connected to the back hole planet? ummm

..I'm no help. why did i hit coment??

LOL@ OH. that i s a very good question. WHAT is that cawoosh? has sam ever explained it? maybe the energy is out of phase? lol. what happens to te people who get kawooshed, anyway?

That was my line of thinking...the power comes from the DHD, so no DHD = dead stargate. and yeah, the one they chucked at the sun was connected to the black hole planet, so got it's energy from that end.

People who get kawooshed are vaporised and all that's left is a pair of smaking feet (Prisoners) or in Barber's case, nothing at all (The Light) :(

I'm sure it has been explained, but I don't remember...something to do with the energy required to form the wormhole? IDK.

In 48 Hours, when the ship hits and destroys the Stargate on the planet, the wormhole disengages. That's with Teal'c still en-route, but I imagine that, if it'll disengage with people still travelling, it'd definitely do it without them.

As for the others... magnets?

But that's when the whole Stargate gets destroyed, not just the DHD. And the problem was that there was no DHD on the other side to keep it going until Teal'c emerged, right? But there's nobody travelling in this scenario so I'm just going to ignore that aspect of it. Lol.

Magnets. *nods* Yes. 42.

Oh, sorry, I read it too fast. Hmmm... Yeah, I'm going with my answer below: fit it to your story, because Stargate wormhole canon is a load of nonsense. :)

Thinking about the radio thing. I can't remember the precise canon, but they've established that radio signals are one of the only things that can pass both ways through a wormhole (one of those things that no doubt pains real scientists). Given that, maybe it wouldn't matter which side was transmitting and which was receiving, just that there was a signal?

In Shades of Grey, Jack dials the SGC from the NID base, goes through, and holds it open by keeping his hand in the event horizon. Quite frankly, I think you can make up whatever the hell fits your story. :)

"
Oh, and a question from OH...why doesn't the kerwoosh destroy the Iris when the wormhole forms behind a closed iris?"

Okay, this is probably a really stupid explanation, but um, I think it's because maybe the matter in the 'kawoosh' doesn't fully integrate; like, the wormhole doesn't fully form, even though it makes the sound? *shrugs*
