He smiles at them all, just like he’s supposed to. Bobby accepts the gifts; laughs at the patterned socks Kitty presents to him, thanks Piotr for the book, kisses Rogue on the cheek as he tries on her carefully selected sweater.

He didn’t really have much of a birthday last year. It was too close to Alcatraz and the memories that came with it, and nobody had felt like celebrating, least of all Bobby.

His parents still send a card every year. No message, just his name at the top, theirs at the bottom. Ronnie doesn’t sign it. Bobby insists he doesn’t care.

The party drags on forever, and Bobby can’t place why he’s so restless, but he is.

There’s just something wrong, something that tickles at his senses, and he catches himself a few times with ice on his fingers.

There’s no danger in the mansion, but his instincts don’t seem to understand that.

He waits as long as he can before excusing himself, and he isn’t sure if anyone notices his edginess.

Rogue probably does, although she thankfully doesn’t comment on it, just squeezes his hand and says she’ll be up in a few minutes.

The window’s open in Bobby and Rogue’s room, and the air is chill, and it feels like a relief after the crowd downstairs, although the room wasn’t hot.

There’s a single card on Bobby’s pillow, his side of the bed, and there’s ice spreading up his arms and Bobby doesn’t understand and forgets to breathe, and the handwriting on the envelope belongs to John.
