Sneaking out of the mansion isn’t their greatest idea. Isn’t John’s greatest idea, because Bobby keeps insisting that he had nothing to do with it, that he’s just being dragged along for the ride, no matter how much they both know that’s a lie.

Bobby needs out as much as John does. They’re teenagers; living in a school day in, day out doesn’t suit them well. Even if it is a school with a jet under the basketball court.

The worst thing about sneaking out is that they were probably caught the moment they thought of it. That’s the problem with having a telepathic headmaster.

They managed several hours outside of the walls before Bobby got restless, which John tries not to be too grateful for, because he’s pretty sure the Professor is in his head at that moment, making sure they don’t stray too far.

One of the teachers is probably trailing them too. Just to be on the safe side.

But they’d had a few hours of freedom, just wandering through the woods and doing nothing, and not obeying any rules, which was the whole point of it.

John’s pretty sure they’ll get a lecture tomorrow, but he’s on too much of a high to care.

Bobby gives him a boost up the tree that’s conveniently close to the wall, close enough to make it possible to climb over, and John makes sure Bobby understands that it’s because John’s feeling selfish and wants to go first and nothing to do with the fact that Bobby’s taller than him.

He scales the other side of the wall, steps back onto the mansion’s grounds, feeling that frantic sense of freedom leaving him within an instant.

Bobby follows, and John knows he can climb down on his own, has seen Bobby do it before plenty of times, so he doesn’t bother to watch.

Except Bobby’s kind of clumsy, and there’s a strangled yelp and the sound of Bobby’s sneakers sliding against the brick wall, and then the jarring feeling of Bobby slamming into him on one side, followed seconds later by the floor slamming into the other side.

John blinks away spots and stares up at Bobby’s shocky wide eyes.

“Oops?” Bobby offers with a sheepish grin.

John reaches up to cuff him over the head.

It’s going to hurt like a bitch tomorrow, which will sit nicely with the headache that’s sure to start with the Professor’s lecture, but in that moment Bobby is warm and sprawled on top of him and trying not to laugh, and John just rolls his eyes and accepts it.
