The Summer Olympics

Rah, Rah?The start of the 2008 Summer Olympics is only two days away and I'm totally 'meh' about it all. This wasn't always the case. Back in the 60's and 70's things seemed much more exciting as it was the good old USA vs. the EVILS of communism. The Olympics are becoming merely another tool to sell products. When M&M/Mars successfully lobbied to have Snickers be the "Official Snack Food Of The 19?? Olympics", I lost my interest.

Now it's another reason to watch cable TV instead of broadcast drivel.

I probably won't be watching any of the events, but I don't think the events themselves are BS. I just don't have any interest in it; I only watched the Olympics before because my parents were watching them. Sports in general aren't really my idea of entertainment, and it doesn't make any difference to the athletes whether I personally watch or not.

I'm fortunate to live somewhere I can watch the games on the CBC. There's a certain amount of Canadian pride going on - but somehow it bugs me less than the constant American cheerleading, and they might actually show some of the kind of obscure events I like to watch.

I watch men's gymnastics, but I got really turned off to women's gymnastics when I realized what the training was doing to those girls' bodies.

When I lived in upstate MY, we used to watch the CBC coverage. Not only is it much better than the American casts, but it didn't have all the stupid side stories and jingoistic crap.
