Dear friends who are better versed in such things than I:

Adobe Lightroom or Apple Aperture?

For context: I have been shooting with a DSLR in jpg mode for about 1.5 years now.  Mostly I’m looking for something that will let me (a) process a ton of photos quickly and painlessly and then upload them to flickr, and (b) let me quickly correct basic stuff ( Read more... )

iPhoto falls over when your library gets large enough to no longer fit on your drive and you end up juggling multiple iphoto libraries because it can't conceive of the concept of wanting to store your photos in multiple places. It was when I had ~100 gigs of iphoto libraries that I realized I needed something that handled large library organization better.

There's http://www.iphotobuddy.com/ -- I have no experience with it but besides being free, its supposedly helps with switching between multiple libraries.

it helps with switching between libraries, which is fine if you're ok with managing multiple libraries. Personally, i'd rather have one large library that understands how to live across multiple locations :) I think iPhoto buddy extended my life with iPhoto by at least a year, though.

Sorry, I should have made this more clear. Currently, I'm shooting in JPG and using iPhoto to sort, catalog and correct. I'd like to convert over to shooting RAW (for all of the assorted reasons cataloged here), and can rapidly see myself approaching the point where I'd be straining iPhoto's organizational capacity, so I'm trying to figure out what the next step is.

I'm going through this right now myself, switching from iPhoto, and there was a really good discussion in Molly's post a couple of weeks ago. I'm switching to Lightroom, myself.

Lightroom strikes me as really expensive.

I have QPict as my backup in case iPhoto starts to choke on the size of my library.

I also have Photoshop Elements, but Adobe Bridge is the most awful piece of crap I've ever encountered. I have Linux photo browsers with a better UI.

I have no opinions except to say I'm really glad this conversation came up as I probably need to make the switch myself, soon.
