he saw that the character was presented as literate, articulate and yet savagely violent when appropriate

I always felt that was the way Ron Ely played the role, within the bounds of violence allowed on 1960s kids' tv.

Very true. I haven't seen that show in lo, these many years; but that's how I recall it. Just before BATMAN started the Camp frenzy, there was quite a lot of well-done adventure shows on TV. The first season of THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. ands T.H.E. CAT come to mind, but TARZAN was pretty good as I recall.

It strikes me just how long it has been since there has been a life-action Tarzan movie despite the long-lived success of this film franchise (I'm not counting the 1999 Disney adaptation, nor the supposedly 2011 animated release).

The last one I recall was TARZAN AND THE LOST CITY, with Casper Whatshisname and Jane March. It had all the ingredients, including Opar and a sophisticated Lord Greystoke... but it was just limp and lifeless, and I couldn't get through it. Too bad. If the exact same movie had been refilmed with some crackle and enthusiasm and a star with some energy, it could have been great.
