A Challenge

In the interest of combating my eternal perfectionism and self-berating tendencies, my therapist has instructed me to "try to do a half-assed job of something" (while, presumably, also trying not to tear my hair out in frustration at my lack of perfect performance ( Read more... )

How about taking something like beginning swing or salsa classes with 'ting? Low stress, easy to laugh at yourself, and nearly everyone is in the same boat.

I found that lubrication eased the self-critic when S- and I did swing. Didn't entirely keep me from freezing up from time to time, but I did end up having a lot more fun.

You could also try meditating. Nothing will highlight perfectionism in overdrive like being alone with your thoughts. In a way, you need to be doing it half-assed in order to be doing it at all right.

Cool! I tried knitting and - you guessed it - tired of it because I wasn't immediately good. But any of those are things I should probably try again.

On an unrelated note, is that icon from Avatar?? Because Craig just showed it to me and I love it :)

In order to decide what activity you should half-assedly take on, you should do some polling and focus groups!

My biggest half-assed activity is writing reviews of books I read on Goodreads. It's not really a big time suck, especially since I try not to spend more than a few minutes on each one. I've been tempted to extend my half-assed reviewing to movies, TV shows, or albums, though, which would make it more of a big deal.
