Now we carry on…
They stand close together as Tosh’s farewell video plays on the screen, seeking comfort in the unity of their grief and loss. But there is emptiness there in the silence as the video ends. Two of their own are gone, their family is broken. And that’s what they are, what they were…family. And they can feel their absence like a heavy weight on their hearts. In their minds, they each question what they are doing there, why they survived and Tosh and Owen did not.
I don’t think I can, not after this.
You can, we all can…
They have to go on. That is their job, their purpose. But the duty weighs on their shoulders in the wake of the tragedy and they find themselves questioning why they should go on. But in their hearts they know that it’s because this is what they do, who they are. The safety of not only those they love, but of the world, rests with them and they must carry on for them.
The end is where we start from…
All that’s left is to pick up the pieces and move forward. The thought of finding replacements leaves a bitter taste in their mouths because they can’t even wait for a period of mourning to do so. But it won’t be the same as before. It’s a flip of the coin, a game of chance as to who lives to see another day in this job. There is a feeling of guilt that they have to bring others into this secret world where so many die so bravely, yet so young. But they must do it and they will, forging on even as the ghosts of Tosh and Owen join the rest of the phantoms that watch over them, other teams members who have gone before.
It’s a new day in the 21st century, and Torchwood has to be ready for whatever comes next.
