I was informed by administration today that I will be teaching senior level English next year. That's British lit! I'll teach "Beowulf" and Chaucer and Pride & Prejudice and Jane Eyre and "Othello"! Is it crazy that I'm equal parts excited and terrified about this? I mean, I've been teaching 10th grade for the past three years, and while it's not ( Read more... )

I NEED ALL THE COSTUMES NOW!!!!

I have one for P&P and could probably get away with wearing my RenFaire garb for Canterbury Tales, but now I need a Jane Eyre-esque ensemble, and WHATTHEHECK does one wear to teach Beowulf? O_O

Oooooooh 5th Century Nordic!!! Leather, furs, and natural fibres, oh my! Makes me want to get back to Historically Accurate Helga Hufflepuff. She's 10th century, but fashion did not evolve too terribly much during those formative years. :)

As for Jane Eyre, early 19th century gowns are some of the easiest to make, IMO. Even with all those gathers. The most challenging part is dealing with the voluminous fabric. If you decide to forge ahead, I have some pattern recommendations for you. ;)

Curse that voluminous material! But yes, I can see how they'd be otherwise relatively simple to make. Does this mean I'll need a hoop skirt?

I wish teachers were allowed to bring (peace-tied) weapons to school. My cousin has a brilliant broadsword that would be AWESOME for Beowulf! But yeah, no, that's never going to happen.

Aaaaaaalll the pattern recommendations!!!

You'll be brilliant at it. How could someone who loves literature as much as you do fail to communicate that to students?

Squee!

You'll be amazing. Any chance of getting students you had in 10th? That might be fun.

I'll definitely have a bunch of "repeats," same kids I taught in 10th last year. I have two girls in particular who have been begging me to teach them again. I can't wait to tell them the news on Monday :D
