An Anti-War Post

Several things came to my attention about our so-called "war on terror" today. Aside from the fact that a war on terror is by nature ridiculous, undefinable, interminable, and a monumental waste, I now have even more reasons to loathe our continuing presence in Iraq and support Ron Paul for President.

this is off topic, but I just mentioned you to one of the people on my friends list, halfmoon_mollie who was expressing some interest in copy writing. I told her that she should ask you how you got started... and then I found myself wondering the same thing--how did you first start in copy writing, and is it going well for you?

I had done some copywriting as a salaried employee, but when I was pregnant with my first son, I started moonlighting with some freelance work some friends threw my way. When I realized how much money I could make with so few hours of work (a beginning copywriter can charge about $50/hr, a really seasoned professional can charge $150+/hr), I decided that I wanted to do it full time once the baby came so I could stay at home.

I bought three books on the subject, two of which have proven to be invaluable. They are The Well Fed Writer by Peter Bowerman and The Well Fed Writer: Back For Seconds. Those books will tell you EVERYTHING you need to know to start a copywriting business.

Things are going well. Whenever we follow the advice of the books, business booms. Whenever we don't follow the advice of the books, things start to slow down a bit. In essence, we feel like we can make as much money as we want to make, and our income is totally dependent on US.

thank you, I've ordered the first one...

I wonder if my total lack of sales capacity would be a handicap... but I'll read it and see what I think; thanks

barbarakelley sent me in your direction. I prefer to ask, is it okay if I friend you?

be sure and see the comment she sent me above--she lists a couple how-to books about copy writing. I've ordered one of them already. Can't wait for it to come...

Or not...
