OOC: Putting together a primer

Oct 03, 2005 14:36

I brought this over here because this is more Cam-centric and I didn't want a debate on my other LJ.

Topic of conversation:

"If an RST was putting together a primer on how to get involved in plot and steal the keys to the plot bus, what suggestions would you make for it?"

Go.

Do what your character would do regardless of the likelyhood that it might kill said character. I have seen this toss people head first into a plotbus more times then I can count.

Be active, dont just stand around... if something looks suspicious and you want to follow it, go do it... listen in on people, make sure people know what your strong points are, what your PC is good for.

Follow any and all leads that are there, one of them is bound to pay off.

Build a PC with some useful skill, be it money, bribery, ass whoopery... whatever...

On a personal note... If some draft were actually to get made, I'd love to see it.. There are so many people over here who complain about not getting into plot and yet there is rampant plot.

This has nothing to do with his post... but I saw your Icon *<3's* and thought I would point out http://www.aeonflux.com/ if you havent seen this yet *cant wait!*

as for the post I agree with the above. I have seen people litterally steal the plot. Just step right in and take over.

Make strong personal ties with other PC's - whether friendly or antagonistic. If you don't get plot, someone in your family/coterie will and you can hop on the bus.

Take risks ICly: Some players can play conservatively and still manage to get involved in plot, but this isn't the case for all, or even most. Go out on a limb; spy on someone, or steal the item that links another PC to a plotline.

Concentrate more on what gets you involved in plot that "what my character would do": If your PC's modus operandi doesn't get you any plot, then you need to change gears and do something else. It's that simple.

RP with someone new: You never know when someone you haven't RPed with before might have a lead on some plot, and you could score an invitation to help with it.

Ask the ST: Sometimes, you just can't find any other way, and you need to ask directly. Be clear and concise; state what sort of plot you'd like to be involved in, and be prepared to be flexible. Be willing to strain your suspension of disbelief. It's far better to briefly test the bounds of believability and get involved in plot, than to not do so and be left in the cold.

Ask other PCs/players: Divest yourself of the notion that you'd be ( ... )

Say yes, not no - Too many players say "No" or "My character just wouldn't do that" when the opportunity comes to take a slight setback in terms of getting involved in plot or furthering plot. Many plots (though not all) start from the premise of something bad happens, and now you must find a way to triumph despite adversity.overwhelming odds. If you aren't willing to take one on the chin, then chances are you won't ever make it to the place where you can look back at all your got involved in. Granted, some situations are prefectly valid times to say no if it will lead to behavior/actions that negatively impact/depict your character concept. But for the most part, we all have our moments in life where we stumble, fall, or even crash and burn gloriously and moments like that are a great way to get on the plot bus.

Honestly, my thought is don't say "steal the keys". For me, that has too much conotation of taking plot away from other players, and maybe I'm too nice, but I don't want other people to be as bored as I've been at times because I derailed their car on the plot train. It's a difference between screwing with someone IC, and making sure they don't have a chance to get on the bus at all.
