The great detective and caving in to a meme

The day they invent LJ-Sec that runs on a Mac I will squeal for joy. There's nothing like going back to my old PC laptop to do a task to make me appreciate how sleek and light my lovely macbook is. I have drunk the kool-aid--I ♥ my macbook.

This meme looked like fun. Grokked from bunches of people:

Brett was the best, but certainly lesser known. Most people's idea of Holmes is entirely based on Basil Rathbone. (I've seen some of his films, by the way, and can't stand them.)

I know! Jeremy Brett! Although the article is about how this film differs from the adaptations that follow Doyle's original vision less closely and maybe the Brett version is considered so faithful they couldn't include it?

Oooh. That one. Okay: Castiel doesn't like Dean's music. I think I had more Castiel's internal ramblings about music and cut it. He's fascinated by the jumble of sound yet doesn't find Dean's music pleasing to his ear.

Jeremy Brett is the last word on the subject. It doesn't look like the movie is going for a definitive Holmes, definitely, a reinvention that also tries to draw out some of the things in Doyle's original stories that usually get lost in most adaptions except for the Jeremy Brett BBC one. (Maybe that's why they left Brett out of the slideshow). The thing is, the stories, there are allusions to Holmes' athletic ability so I'm intrigued by this fighter and swordsman and great brain idea.

Jeremy Brett is my once and future Sherlock Holmes--and, incidentally, pretty darn close to the books. Basil Rathbone is the one that started the whole popular myth of Holmes as the stuffy detached English gentleman. He also started the deerstalker cap thing, and "Elementary, my dear Watson."

But this looks darn interesting. Especially if they thrown in Holmes's cocaine addiction. I would love that. (Law is a bit pretty for Watson, though, I have to say.)

Jeremy Brett, first, last, and always. :)

The Basil Rathbone films are mostly good just to watch Basil Rathbone, who was charismatic. So much so, he made everyone believe that was what Holmes was supposed to be. Otherwise they're kind of Hollywood potboilers, aren't they? I think I watched them once because they were famous and never looked at them again. Basil Rathbone is kind of impressive, though--I think he makes a better villain.

It's either going to be a complete trainwreck or utterly awesome. I don't really see any middle ground. I'm hoping for the latter, but I really can't think about any aspect of the project without giggling hysterically.

Ha, pretty much! I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with it, and I hope it's not awful!

Intrinsically I don't think it's a big step away from the original stories to have Holmes and Watson be men of action--they're just frontloading it a lot here. And I am thrilled with the direction they're going with Watson. The Jeremy Brett Holmes series had a decent Watson but I'm more intrigued by what Jude Law wants to do. I mean, the guy is a doctor, and a war vet--he's sort of the hand to Holmes' brain. Even the Brett version didn't really get that, they still played him as plodding (even if the Brett Watsons weren't stupid or bumbling).

My favorite subversions and adaptations EVER though is Without a Clue. ♥ Ben Kingsley is Watson to me, for all time. Hee.

I'm not sure that the idea of Holmes as an action hero is any closer to the books than the debonair version :).

That is, unless he's also a drug addict and a total dick... which might be why RDJ was picked to play him. ;)

It is closer than the debonair. It's been a while since I read, but the stories do allude to Holmes athletic abilities. I think the movie's pushing it to the extreme--sounds like Holmes will be a tad more manic than the original stories have it. I always felt like Holmes was very controlled, except when he was in a drug-induced haze.

This spin sounds really interesting to me, though.
