Wow you've totally removed the necessity for me to post something similar today! Except that I live in a busy city neighborhood rather than the suburbs, making it even more awesome to walk your dog off leash ( ... )

Unrelated -- Feel free to pimp in parrot_lovers and practicalcats. Both are creatures that create huge amounts of messes. ;)

For all the rest -- it's sad that this is so damn true. It's also how to have your dog play at the off leash park. Particularly the lack of recall.

Parrots are the grossest creatures in the universe to live with, things whose sole purpose in life is seeing how much mess they can make. :)

I'm not surprised that the community joined, let's put it that way. ;) (I did too.)

i walk my dog 3x daily because we live in an apartment. i ALWAYS walk him on a leash. just in the past week, we have had several dogs come running up to us. their owners are working in the garage, or the front yard, and just let their dogs run around with them. they cross the street and approach other people and dogs on the other side. i have had to holler for their owners to call their dogs because they're not even looking. and yeah, half the time the dog doesn't listen anyway.
i want a copy of my city's leash law to hand out to people whose dogs approach us off leash.

I am currius whether you guys have offleash parks in your areas? There is a large park by our house that has offleash hours til ten in the morning... Am I just really lucky to have lots of offleash areas around my house? Or are ppl just not taking advantage of the ones in your area?

We do have a lot of areas that are shared with other users where dogs are permitted to be off leash provided they are under the 'effective control' of their handler at all times. These areas are pieces of parkland around the suburbs, or surrounding drainage ponds or playing fields. Otherwise dogs are required to be on a leash.

There is at least one of these spaces within 150 metres of where we encountered this dog, but its handler was choosing not to use it. There are at least 3 other spaces in the suburb too. Makes it all the more unforgivable in my view, but then I guess the dog isn't under 'effective control' wherever it is anyway.
