A Little Story (Why Children Shouldn't Walk Dogs).

So why is it that I always say that kids should not be allowed to walk dogs? Oh yes! I remember now.

Little Allison is a stunning example.Allison is approximately 6 years old. She probably weighs 50lbs, at most. She's about the normal height for a 6 year old, which is what, three apples tall ( Read more... )

Actually I can understand why some people prefer the flexi-leads. I walk a Great Dane for my pet sitting job, and he tends to run ahead, and since he runs with so much force, it is easier for me to walk him with the flexi-lead that with the normal leash (I did try both). But UGH a 6 year old??? My mom barely wanted me to HAVE a dog at 6, she was so scared something "bad" would happen. Walking it was out of the question. I am so glad your dog was so obedient and disaster was averted...:)

Wouldn't it be better to train the dane, instead of allowing it to do what it wants? You're just getting a false sense of control. If he were to decide to leave you, that lead *will* snap.

I would train the Dane, but his owner doesn't want to pay me to work with him, and the amount of work he does need would take a lot of my time, and I don't have the money to do it for free or not on scheduled days...:(

I walked the dog when I was a kid/early teen. He was a huge unneutered male GSD (because neutering is unnatural) that was trained to attack anybody who gets near me (becasue eaching attack training is COOL and hiring a trainer is stupid and a waste of money). He weighed more than I did, and he knew that. My parents coudln't be bothered to take him for a walk themselves, so I was told that if I don't do it or if I am not strong enough to walk him, they will take him to the vet and have him put to sleep. And that it would be MY fault on the account of being too stupid and useless to do something as simple as walk the dog.

And now they wonder why I don't call them anymore..

We had a Min Schnauzer when I was little. The rule was that you had to be in 5th grade to walk her alone. She weighed 14 pounds. I cannot comprehend letting a young child walk any dog, let alone a dog that weighs as much as them!

While I did at one point have a dog that was walkable by a small child (he would let me two year old walk him)... I never actually let the kids take him out alone! Even the 6 year old had to walk the dog ONLY with me, and the only time he got to keep the leash in his hands only was when we were in the fenced area of the park.

Flexi leads are one of the worst ideas EVAR! (They rank somewhere just below turpentine enemas.)
