A Little Story (Why Children Shouldn't Walk Dogs).

So why is it that I always say that kids should not be allowed to walk dogs? Oh yes! I remember now.

Little Allison is a stunning example.Allison is approximately 6 years old. She probably weighs 50lbs, at most. She's about the normal height for a 6 year old, which is what, three apples tall ( Read more... )

Oh man. Flexi-leads. I've seriously seen about 3 snap at dog parks. D:
My dog's lead is leather and chain (Not like OMG SUPATHUG chain btw XD) He's DESTROY a flexilead.
Geez my parents wouldn't let me walk our dogs when I was six. I wonder WHY.

guh. *slaps Allison's parents with a wet fish*

flexi-leads are evil. someone gave me one and I walked Squish on it once. The thing snapped the first time we saw a cat and I still have a scar on my hand from the burn it gave me. never again.

oh hell no.

my kid (90lbs) is allowed to take maggie (45lbs) out for a quick pee only. she knows to stay away from other dogs (and everything else, actually) and has been instructed in how to hold a (strong, hemp) leash 2-handed for safety/security.

Oy flexis. I really don't get why people like them so much for several reasons. One being, for me, I'm small and have small hands. They get sweaty easily especially if I'm doing stuff. The hard plastic part of the flexi is hard for me to keep a grip on. When I use a regular leash I put my hand through the loop and wrap it around my wrist, that way even if the dog suddenly jumps and pulls real hard causing me to let go the leash is still wrapped around my wrist and I don't lose the dog. I don't consider flexis leashes because most people are obviously not properly controlling their dog (let alone paying attention to where the hell it's going) which is the purpose of a leash. Just a back door from getting out of a leash law ticket. GRR.

oooooooooooooooh! Never wrap a leash around your wrist! It's a VERY good way to have a snapped wrist, especially with some of the bigger dogs.

I always loop the leash over my thumb on my 'anchor' hand, and then gather the excess up. You'd be surprised how strong that grip is. It won't feel like it at first, but let me tell ya!

i guess i never thought about that because most of the dogs i've walked were very good on a leash or were small/medium sized so i've never had a problem with it. i always try to hold it across my body so i have that extra hand yanno? but some dogs just don't know they're supposed to walk on the left so it doesn't always work
