My dog is food aggressive since I started feeding her real food. Can you help? Last time she growled, I gave her a good scruff shake and an alpha roll. I sure hope she rips my face off! I mean, I'm working hard on teaching her that I'm the bad guy, that growling in unacceptable (y'know, so she'll bite without warning), and that I want to steal away ( Read more... )

While I'm pretty much never going to alpha roll my dogs, mostly because they don't need it, The Mate did basically alpha roll our husky not too long after we got him. He didn't have him on his back, and he just had his knee on his neck enough to hold him down without choking him, but it completely got the point across.

Of course, said husky had pinned our younger dog for being a silly bitch when he moved in, so in this case it was probably a matter of communicating in a way he understood.

Ironically, the husky is the only animal in the house that does not consider me the ultimate authority. That includes the kids most of the time too.

I'm rather anti-alpha roll and the general philosophy that goes with it. I don't think that everything dogs do is related to status. Most dogs aren't even true alpha material, but they will take the hard, stressful job of alpha if no one else does. They'd rather just be dogs. That is my opion....

Dogs don't understand things like alpha rolls. It's not normal dog behavior. It's a huge misconception and a huge mistake. I'd discourage it in the future if I were you.

On the bright side, at least she's listening and seems to be taking in some of the info. :)

Huskies can be interesting, LOL. I do understand... However, I had to say that I didn't think it was exactly the best way to go about it in most cases (I do know that one or two alpha rolls over a lifetime can be beneficial to certain dogs), it's a dangerous practice and not something to be done by the general public.
