Author's Notes: A short ficklet about Maggie the Cat, and how she came to be where she was.
Maggie Reed never really thought about poverty when she was growing up. Her family was firmly middle class, with just enough money to see her off to the local community collage. She didn't see homeless people, except on TV or during her rare trips to the city. And it was their fault they were homeless, anyway. There were addicts and hookers and godless folk.
It was her boyfriend's idea to move to New York. And it was so exciting. The Big Apple was so different from Ohio that it might as well have been another world. Everything moved so fast.
Maggie just couldn't keep up.
Every month she fell a little big more behind. Her job didn't quite cover all the bills. And then her job wasn't there anymore, and neither was her boyfriend.
But she had made her decision. She was going to tough it out. She was Maggie Reed, and Reeds did not run home when things got a little tough.
But there was no more money, and one day Maggie came home to find her things on the street. All her jewelry was gone, and a beggar was running away with her best coat.
Suddenly, Maggie Reed was invisible. Untouchable. People's eyes slid right past her, and she soon came to dread those times when they didn't.
Then the man with the red hair and the fine clothes came, and changed her life.
