I nearly gave up on the series due to not liking the 2nd book, but still owned the third so decided to give it a shot. That's really interesting. I've been reluctant to post about DF because I thought the first book was okay, but can't really be bothered to finish the second. Oddly, I'm not finding as...dark (I think that's the word I'm looking for) as I thought it would be - to me, it feels stuck somewhere between Chandler and Pratchett, but not in a good way. Since so many people on my flist love it, and said I'd love it, I feel bad for not doing! But maybe I'll give the 3rd a go and see if it grabs me.
I actually never finished the second book. And, I hate to say it, but I find all DF books get kind of boring around 1/3rd to 1/2 into it. I'm reading, and fascinated, and then I'm yawning and the characters are blah-blah-blahing and I wind up skimming for a bit.
Isn't it odd that in the 2 'fandoms' we share we are the opposite on? I cannot read slash in NCIS (UST I am fine with) and SGA is very definitely a slash fandom for me.
I have major issues with DADT (Don't Ask Don't Tell) in SGA/SG1. They're military, it just couldn't happen. And, frankly, I don't even like UST. For the life of me I can't see anything between Rodney and John (or Carson, or Ronon or any of the males on the show) so it always seems so OOC for me when anyone is in a relationship.
As for NCIS... I can read the slash (although not pwp so much). Even if I don't see it. In my head I differentiate between IC on screen and IC in fanfic. I don't know why I can't do that for other shows. Although, to be fair, I'd rather have UST or mentor/big brothering/father figure or just team fic in NCIS too.
