Finished a project for school today, planning an exhibition. It had to include a story line, timeline, gallery layout, and exhibit brief, explaining all the stuff the "team" might need to know about this exhibit. It's the first half of the larger project due at the end of the semester. I did my exhibit on the Shaker lifestyle in 19th century New ( Read more... )

I never heard of NAGPRA, so I looked it up. Do I have this right?: Native Americans can make a claim for items that are in museums. Does it go the other way? Do museums OFFER items to Native Americans? Probably not. Anyway, do you have any experience with the Act? I did a quick google for IMLS and NAGPRA, and a bunch of stuff came up, so it seems like a really meaty topic. Do you know what you want to focus on? A case study of a specific museum? Good luck!

Under the law, museums HAD TO provide to any Native American tribe that asked, a listing of all known Native American items in their collections. The individual tribes could lay claim to these objects by proving cultural affiliation. The objects would be repatriated to the tribe. Unfortunately this put the burden of proof on the NA tribes. This is not exactly a good thing, it's hard for many tribes to prove continuity, mostly because during the early part of the 20th century, an effort was made to assimilate NA into mainstream society and tribes were disbanded or driven into hiding etc. It's a whole big can of worms ( ... )

I would love to see your paper. I was just on the NPR site, and I saw a story about the Smithsonian's American Indian museum. Here's a link:

the NAGPRA paper is here. http://www.donnamdube.com/writings/nagpra.pdf

The new museum in DC is going to be nice, I'm a charter member and have already received an invitaion to the opening events gala in September. I plan to go if I am not working or if I am can get the time off. It's going to be pretty busy the first couple of weeks after it opens I'm sure, but the invite gets me free admission to a members only viewing of the exhibits and reception. I'm looking forward to it.
