I'm actually glad I got to see Steve Irwin's memorial this morning. His funeral was actually last week and that was private and for his family and friends. Today was for rememberance. For all the other people that Steve touched to say thank you and goodbye. I don't think it macabre, or disresepectful. Steve lived for life, for animals and for people and he definitely made a difference. And while I might not have known him personally, I definitely learned something by watching this morning.

Danii,
I couldn't agree with you more! A friend of mine called me tonight crying beacuse she was watching Steve Irwin's funeral on t.v.! I really think that death is a very personal thing, that should only be shared with those who truly knew you intimatley. The media loves to eat this stuff up beacuse they make money off of it. Only a percentage of the profits gets donated to the family or the causes it says it does. It goes to show that nothing in this life is sacred anymore!

it wasn't steve's funeral this morning, it was a public memorial. the family elected to do it. the funeral was a private one held last week, as mzsocialbutterfly said. i thought that the family had be pretty clear in their desire to do something that the general population could be involved with as an acknowledgment of the fact that people felt like they knew steve and he was a friend.
brockie's family elected to have a state funeral. they would've known there'd be camera crews and people around. people don't mean to be disrespectful and i don't think they were. a lot of them would've felt like brockie was part of the family, a friend so they would've wanted to be there to say goodbye. you can't deny people that.
his family could've chosen to have a private funeral like steve irwin's did. it's not disrespectful that people were there, it's them coming out to show that this particular individual touched their lives in one way or another.
it's the only way we can show the family left behind that we're also feeling the loss, admittedly not as great as their's. we don't know how their families felt but i'd like think the turn-outs comforted them because it showed that both brockie and steve were much loved and will be missed.
also a point missed above about steve irwin's actual funeral (held last week in private) is that the family has not even released the details of where he is buried.... so how is that for private?
not that I particularly mind... he'd probably get dug up by some freaks and tried to be sold on ebay.
Does ebay have a policy against human remains being sold? (gee I hope so)
