ATTENTION WRITERS!

Okay, I need some feedback from all you writers out there to prove to my stepdad what I've been trying to tell him since I've gotten home.

Before you can sell yourself effectively in the writing market, it's a good idea to actually have something written. Not published, just written. A good solid draft, whether it's the first draft or the 12, ( Read more... )

This post is really for my stepdad's benefit than my own (hence why it is public), but thank you for the link. :) I will definitely be checking that out.

OK, just saying you are a writer will do you no good. You have to have some form of writing examples ready for them to revue and see if you are worth their time. If you just say "gimme money, I'll write for you" you won't get any jobs in that industry. They need solid proof of your ability to make yourself understood to readers, whether you're focusing on novels, essays, short stories, etc.

I totally agree that you need to have written something before you say I am a writer

Try this analogy:
Do you want the airplane pilot with experience, or just the guy who says "No, I've never flown a plane. But I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night..."

Okay...not the same situation but it might make for a funny line to toss at yer stepdad....

I think it's better to have a wide spectrum of work to go from. The longer you take working on your writing, the better it's bound to be. I say: full body of work over having something published.

That's probably true, but I'd say that you have to have more than just "something" solid. I'd say that, in order to sell yourself, you have to have a good portfolio (a couple of works) plus some skills in marketing (in order to sell yourself). I'd consider both to be of equal importance.

Yeah, I know, you thought I was dead.
