A few people have mentioned a weekend type plan for crate training, like this one, but to be honest, I have never seen it work. The outline is good, though, and that link goes over how much time is too much time to be spending in a crate.
This is more or less how crate training should be done, and it can take up to several weeks to get to the point of leaving the dog home alone in the crate for extended periods of time. but you can take some comfort in the fact that a lot of puppies would cry for up to 2-3 weeks non stop at night when alone (supposedly sleeping). mine did. i never had to teach him to be alone, after he fell asleep somewhere around the 14-15th night, he was pretty ok with being alone (during the day we did the stay alone training but at night we insisted he be alone lol). unforunatley it doesn't happen for all dogs naturally, but even a little training can go a long way
