Update on pet food recall, 27 April 2007

We have a metric tonne of updates to the news ticker:

a) All three of the "big three" pet food processing companies in the US (Menu Foods, Diamond, and American Nutrition) are now known to have received contaminated Chinese grain products; in a particularly disturbing move, American Nutrition has apparently been adding rice gluten to pet food ( Read more... )

all BB wet can food has been pulled off the shelf in a VOLUNTARY recall by Blue Buffalo company. I was not even told ahead of time until I went to my Friday PetsMart location to demo today and the manager told me. I was really pissed. I sold dry bag food however. But all wet can food has been pulled off the shelves....

I have to say that--at least to Blue Buffalo's credit--they are probably being one of the most proactive companies (along with Innova) with this whole recall thing (in fact, they are also looking for a new canning facility along with Innova)

But yeah, this is bad for many reasons (including confirming a fear of mine--that pet food processors may in fact be adding "extra ingredients" to batches without telling companies, something that also happened with Diamond and Natural Balance, meaning potentially all product from that packing firm is potentially contaminated). I have to worry about the stability of a LOT of companies, including Blue Buffalo, in this light ( ... )
