With Pete and Jackie, they really did feel like the same people, just that they had money and money effects people. And the same with Amy and Rory with being the same people.

Really, I think that is something that Who does really well. A lot of times, alternate characters don't really feel like the same people. But at least in Nu Who, they seem like the same people in different circumstances.

I'm indifferent about a lot of RTD's alternate universe characters, but I prefer the Tenth Doctor rather than his metacrisis. I think it's because there was not a lot of development and screentime devoted to his metacrisis, and the metacrisis' characterization is all over the place.

As for Amys and Rorys? I liked the Rory we first met in Series 5, before he was killed off all the time and turned into a Auton. The Amy I liked was the Amy that was stuck in the Two Streams facility. I would've really liked to have seen her journey from having faith in the Doctor coming back to her hatred of him, as well as how she made her sonic probe, how she used a katana and how she made a Handbot her pet.

And while I'm on the subject of Amys, I do have to agree with some critics that it was frustrating to see Amy move forward in a direction, only to have her story reset constantly. It would've been nice to have Amy have one huge change in her life and then struggle with that change until she decided to leave the Doctor.

I agree with philstar22--New Who does a great job at retaining the same characters under different circumstances in all the AU/doppelganger plotlines. Pete Tyler is one of my favorite minor characters, because underneath all the ways he's a bit of a fuck-up, he repeatedly shows that he's got his head screwed on straight as regards AU versions of his loved ones/chances to start over, to the point of immense self-sacrifice if necessary.

Moffat era AU characters and time lines are always a bit wonky for me as it seems to reset too often for me to care really. But, to a small degree, some of the AU is retained in the memories of Amy and Rory so they're actually never fully reset. However, there's not enough character arc really until the "Power of Three" for them which was kind of sad really.

I don't know if one can say which RTD alt!character you could like more than the other because they were essentially the same people but with money or without, with a grandma or not, etc. I did have a preference to proper!Jackie over the alt universe one because money bags Jax was just really annoying. I did like alt!Pete better though.

The only real difference between the Petes is that in the alternate universe his schemes worked. He seemed a very decent, courageous, and responsible man in both worlds, as right away voiced his concerns about his the possiblity of his 19 year old daughter with a man who seemed older than he would have been. Both Pete's both adored Jackie, that is clear. His sacrifice in the real world was a moment of breathtaking courage, and in a way having him pop up again, some how obscuired the weight of his actions ( ... )
