Considering that Rose Tyler worked in a department store (Shop?!--shops in the USA usually mean small exclusive stores, or "Mom and Pop" establishments), the Autons was a perfect blend of spookiness and connecting the old series to the new. I don't remember details about the original Autons, except that it creeped me out.

And Chris E, the wonderfully working class tough and sexy Doctor, in black leather, barely hiding a broken heart was the perfect progression from Eight's jolly, pretty, eccentric , although we do see the steel in Eight--I could imagine a real person having gone thorugh all that the Doctor had been through emerging as he did.

I think this is a bit of an odd question because the Autons aren't a particularly huge part of Rose as the episode is about... well, Rose, and introducing the Doctor himself. The monster is insignificant; I believe there could've been others to serve their purpose just as well. But as far as the episode actually went, the Autons were well-portrayed and a familiar throwback to the classic series. They could definitely have done worse.

My only question is why they haven't come back as the main villain in any story since. They control plastic. If there was anything Terror of the Autons taught us, it's that plastic is everywhere and can be use in many colourful ways to kill people. Also, they can be manufactured into living replicas of the species they invade and be implanted with false memories to work as sleeper agents. Remind me why they keep bringing the Daleks back again..?

Trufax: Terror of the Autons is my fandom conversion serial. The Master going on a killing spree with inflatable chairs and plastic daffodils usually win people over within two episodes. :P

I love the autons, even though they don't make a lick of sense ( ... )

"Autonomous" Autons, which had a piece of Nestene Consciousness inside them and developed personalities when separated from the control unit, were featured in the 2008 Eighth Doctor audio story "Brave New Town". -- is that the thinking behind Rory?

Yep, that's the first thing I thought of when I the reveal was made.
