Were there any similarities, or themes, that were similar between these mother/daughter relationships? One of the first things Jackie says to Rose was that she was not going to take care of her, so even though they lived together, Jackie expected Rose to look after herself and contribute to the household. Jackie was a young widow who never remarried and there doesn't seem any significant male presence in her life. I think they were often more Sisters, than mother and daughter. Still, Jackie's life was something Rose wanted to escape ( ... )

About Donna i think the problem is her mother never get her daughter at all... She is more like her grand dad who is clearly her father figure, and maybe more like her dad that i think she didn't know too much You might be on to something. Sometimes a daughter is so unlike what the Mom wanted her daughter to be that the mom--un pushing the daughter to be what the Mother wants her to be--misses who her daughter really is. But Sylvia struck me as truly frightened. She is living with her widowed father and single daughter, and she's alone. You could tell she took Shaun in as a son, rather than son in law.
