Discussion: Companion's Families, why did we only see the women's?

It just occurred to me, in conjunction with other posts about sexism or female emancipation or characterization in New Who, that of all the male and female characters in New Who, we only really ever see the women's families.

Why not the men's?

Is this sexist? Or a parochial view? Or ( Read more... )

The Classic show often had plots that dealt with controversial topics or sometimes featured scenarios which caused controversy--For example it is said that executives saw Six's tenure as abusive, (especially towards women) and violent because of scenes like this:

Made a sort of resource about representation in New Who: over here!

There has been lots of discussion for a long while about the lack of female writers in Doctor Who. This has interested me in how it compares to other SF shows (particularly in the UK but also elsewhere). Is it a typical problem of the genre in the 21st Century or is Torchwood more the norm?
