I don't believe it's the end of The Master/Missy. No way would she remember needing a spare de-materialisation circuit and not remember shooting herself in the back. She will have put in some safeguards.
Agreed. I really thought that last scene was going to have been the Tardis taking the doctor back to the patch of devastated forest where Missy was laying, and she'd pick herself up and help him out with his regeneration.
Having made the whole season about the redemptive arc of the Doctor/Missy, it was... really peculiar that they just let it resolve that way.
1) "Let's have both the Master and Missy in the season finale!" 2) "We need an arc. Let's build up this whole thing about a vault, and slowly reveal it's Missy in the vault." 3) "We need something about Missy and the vault. How about if we tease that maybe Missy is getting reformed?"
So the redemptive arc was really the tacked-on excuse, not something that was integral to the planning of the season. It sure came off that way in the finale, anyway.
Did we find out the whole story of how and why Missy was in teh vault anyway? There was that scene where she was going to be executed by somebody, and for some reason the Doctor was called in to perform the execution, and instead... somehow she wound up in the vault instead, but the Doctor could let her out whenever as it turned out. And... I feel like I must have missed something.
It's a shame, apart from the monks, I've really quite enjoyed this season. I enjoyed last weeks episode. But the resolution felt untidy.
(And cheap, my gosh, when they can only muster a half dozen people as the tides of at risk humanity, then, the budget has seriously been squeezed.)
I wasn't horribly disappointed this with episode, but I didn't love it either. I'm sad that Bill is gone. First Donna, now her. Why do all the great companions only hang around for one season? As for Missy, I definitely think she survived. The way she was laughing... there was no way she didn't take precautions to survive. I am cautiously looking forward to the Christmas special.
I loved this episode! I will definitely miss Missy and Bill.
And Missy turned out good in the end? She said we should stand with the Doctor. Do you think 12 helped her to change good?
And the FEELS! The Doctor quoting 10 and 11 I don't want to go....when the Doctor was me! And the Doctor seeing all the companions and HE SAW CLARA. He remembered Clara. Huzzah! I'm not a huge Clara fan but that was incredibly sad he had no memory of her.
I can't wait to see the First and Twelfth Doctor together in the Christmas episode. I will NOT be looking forward to 12 regenerating. He really is my fave Doctor. He's incredible in the role.
I completely forgot that the Doctor wasn't supposed to remember Clara. Now I wonder if that was just an oversight by the writers or if they included it deliberately.
I feel that Bill's resolution was too similar to Clara's - cheating death to travel the universe as a quasi-immortal as an adventurer in her own right with a female companion by her side. It was the only aspect of this episode I felt really jarred.
I'm sure Bill and her watery friend will encounter Clara and Ashildr/Me on their travels.
Master/Missy was playing into the Doctor's theme of redemption for the season. The whole "Without Hope, Without Witness, Without Reward" theme.
First there's the fact that Missy makes the heroic choice herself, following the above with no hope of success, no one to see her do it, and no one to reward her for it.
Secondly, The Doctor gets what he was hoping for, Missy wanted to stand by his side like he had wanted all along. But, like Missy, despite the fact that those he has believed in tried to give it to him, he never receives that reward. He never witnesses her success. His hope, is ultimately not rewarded, but he tried and (known only to the viewer) succeeded.
Also, a thought shared from another site I follow, but did the Doctor's hands look a bit odd when he dug them into the snow at the end? Younger? Maybe even more feminine? Is it possible that the Doctor has regenerated but, like Bill the Cyberman, hasn't recognized it yet?
Even if she'd lived another thousand lifetimes, I doubt Missy would ever have been able to be redeemed for the evil actions she's taken throughout her unnaturally-prolonged life. However, what is important is that she eventually made a choice and lived (and died) by it. The choice to stand by the Doctor means everything.
